Nonpoint source (NPS) pollution from agriculture is the leading source of impairment to Survey Rivers and lakes. Pesticides are one of the major NPS pollutants that result from agricultural activities. Among those pesticides, is Bromoxynil (BRMX) which is a widely used herbicide. The present study was carried out to determine the capability of selected biological control agents to degrade BRMX at different incubation periods. Standard methods were used to assess the effectiveness of 101 products for use against oil slicks. Products were emulsifiers, agglomerants or precipitants and were tested against oil from Edjele, Kuwait and Syria. For each kind of product, a review is given of the previous tests, the choice of methods is discussed, the methodology is described, and results are presented and interpreted. In addition, the relationship between physical properties and effectiveness is discussed, with graphical examples and the advantages and disadvantages are indicated. It is concluded that at present no 'miracle' product exists for use in this field. The necessity to combat oil slicks makes it necessary to assess the relative effectiveness and toxicity of dispersal agents used. This is usually done by using individual or groups of indicator organisms. Following the Torrey Canyon disaster, attention was directed to finding effective but innocuous means to combat the pollution risk of shipping oil. To introduce the minimum of chemicals into the sea, it was decided to use a little of a strong, but possibly more harmful, substance rather than more of a weaker and less offensive one. Toxicity of seven emulsifying agents for treating oil spills (ISTPM designation E sub(22), E sub(30), E sub(41), E sub(46), E sub(47), E sub(52) and E sub(53)) was determined using eight marine species (three gastropods, one bivalve, two crustacean and one fish). Results are tabulated as LD sub(50). E sub(47) was least toxic to the species studied, but it could still perhaps harm other plant and animal species. |

Plants respond to environmental adversities, becoming an indicator for assessing the environment quality. Para determinar la concentración de DDT y sus metabolitos en ejemplares de cocodrilos (Crocodylus acutus y C. moreletii), durante el período de junio a diciembre de 2004 se tomaron 80 muestras de sangre en 37 localidades de 13 estados de la zona costera de México. En algunos de estos sitios, ha sido aplicado el DDT para el control del vector del paludismo. It is presented an analysis of several indicators of water quality in Santiago de Cuba bay and of the bacteriological state in five of its beaches. Samples were taken in surface and 8 m deep. A low transparency of the waters was detected, associated with high levels of ammonium, total phosphorus and chlorophyll. In surface the dissolved oxygen had high levels, but in 8 m there was anoxia in the most interior stations.
